May is Older Americans Month and the 2015 theme, ?Get into the Act, honors the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act. When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as ?Senior Citizens Month,? the prelude to ?Older Americans Month.? Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs, and other activities. South Iredell Senior Center is joining in the celebration and will hold an Older Americans Month event on Fri., May 22. All senior adults are invited to the celebration. The festivities will start at 1 p.m. with a time of food, fellowship, and door prizes. Mayor Atkins will be joining us and presenting the Senior Center with a Proclamation for Older Americans Month. To help us ?Get into the Act?, we will all be encouraged and up lifted by our motivational speaker, Jim Cooper, who will share how you can be your best and make the most of every day. Last but not least, what would a celebration be without some good entertainment that makes you smile and laugh? So, come prepared to be entertained, laugh and have a good time. Each person attending will be given information and the opportunity to advocate for the Reauthorizing of the Older American?s Act which helps to sustain funding for the Senior Center. Don?t miss the celebration. To attend you must pre-register by Thurs, May 14 by calling 704-662-3337.
