There is an on-going concern of the growing number of Elder Abuse cases reported. Last year there were 24,545 reports of abuse, neglect or exploitation of elders in North Carolina. It is crucial that we all bring awareness and be a voice for those who can’t speak for themselves. Each year the Governor of North Carolina signs a proclamation designating “Vulnerable and Elder Abuse Awareness Month.” Like so, a proclamation is signed by the President of the United States proclaiming June 15 as “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.” On a local level the South Iredell Senior Center will be hosting a FREE educational workshop on elder abuse to increase the community’s awareness. Elder abuse can be in the form of isolation, financial, verbal, emotional, physical, etc. Come join Officer Spiegel, MPD and learn the various types of elder abuse and what signs to look for as evidence that abuse is taking place. Also discussed will be what you should do if you suspect abuse. Open to the community, this workshop will take place on Thurs., June 16 at 10:30 a.m. Who should attend, staff and volunteers of aging service agencies, in-home care agencies, retirement and assisted living communities, ministerial staff, caregivers, companion sitters, and anyone working with the aging community or interested in learning how to identify elder abuse. A tasty breakfast is being sponsored and provided by Mooresville Center Genesis Health Care. RSVP by calling 704-662-3337 by Fri., June 10.
