As you age it gets hard to maintain a lean body and really tough to burn away body fat. Two key factors involved are what you put into your body, as the old saying goes you are what you eat, and the extent of exercising you do to burn away body fat. Some fats in moderation are actually good for you such as those found in nuts and olive oil. Unfortunately, eating too much fat, especially bad fats, with a lack of exercise ends up as the spare tire syndrome around your waist line or a beach ball belly.
