Charlotte Music Awards 2010 Folk Artist of the Year
I am a performer and writer living in Mooresville, NC. I have three amazing teenaged children and one fantastic white dog, as well as a full-time job and three bands (more on them in a minute). Yep! I stay pretty busy! But I love playing and watching how people respond to music – for three minutes at a time, we change peoples lives and distract them from their troubles. Music truly does make this life bearable. I also love the collaborative energy that comes when musicians gather… euphonic magic!! Audiences really enjoy seeing what will happen next! This is the spirit of Folk music. We participate in it (as listeners and performers) and we pass it on.
MARIE REID AND RYAN CHAPPELL: Charlotte Music Awards Folk Artists of the Year 2010
A duo playing smaller venues, we explore a clear and sometimes rough-edged honest Americana-Folk-Blues sound in tunes Marie has written or covers she wishes she had written. Ryan’s extraordinary guitar skills and sparse harmonies add just the right touches to finish off their sound. We began learning each other’s music after a chance meeting at an open mic in 2000 in Ryan’s native Statesville, NC.
FOURTH CREEK BAND – James Taylor Tribute Band (www.fourthcreekband.com)
Members are Steve Roy (vocals), Marie Reid (harmony vocals, light percussion and a little), Ryan Chappell (guitar), Richard Wood (sax, flute), Tony Baker (percussion). Steve had a dream to perform James Taylors tunes and we honestly thought he was nuts! But after many months of studying and rehearsing, we’ve got something and our audiences love it.
WRECKING BALL– Ambient Dusty Cowboy Americana (www.wreckingballband.com)
This is an exciting new group formed of four veteran musicians – Douglas Barnhill (lead guitar), Brian Doell (bass), Scott McGlaughlin (drums/percussion), and Marie (vocals and acoustic guitar). All are writers and all have been down a multitude of musical roads over the years. Think Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Patty Griffin, Reckless Kelly, with a little Jeff Beck. In our short history, we have played North Carolina Balloon Festival, opened for Josh Sawyer at the Sylvia Theater, and opened for Sam Bush at the Neighborhood Theater! We’ve also spent some time recording.
My daughter used to ask what my favorite color was. My answer was something like, "Please don't make me choose just one!" Music is like that for me too. Mine is an eclectic collection at best. I play in the styles of music that raised me. Emmylou, Ronstadt, Lightfoot, CSN, PPM, Don Williams, Denver, Raitt, The Doors, Bach, Rhapsody in Blue and the poetry of The Raven were inescapable influences as I was immersed in a house full of older brothers, sisters, and my folks, each with their own unique musical and artistic tastes.
Southwest Virginia is home, but I live and play around Mooresville, NC. My intent is to provide quality entertainment through my passion for good writing. I have had the good fortune of playing with some incredibly talented musicians and absolutely love collaboration. This is a fun, but mature set with selections that speak to the heart - stories that paint the American experience in song - stories we can all relate to.
Many thanks to all who support live music right in our own backyard.
