Mr. Richard Eller, Professor of History, Historian In Residence at the Catawba County Museum of History, Catawba Valley Community College, will be the speaker at the January 19 meeting of the PROBUS Club of Lake Norman. He will be be talking about Piedmont Airlines (remember them?). In 2009, his book, "Piedmont Airlines: A Complete History," won the "Willy Parker Peace" Book Award from the North Carolina Association of Historians. In 2011, Mr. Eller prepared a documentary video presentation titled "Speedbird: The History of Piedmont Airlines". He will show us the condensed version of this documentary, which has aired three times on UNC-TV. Mr. Eller has studied the possible North Carolina origins of Abraham Lincoln, has taken his American Civil War history class to visit various battlefields, including Gettysburg, has produced an oral history of Asian migration to Catawba County, as well as doing his Master's thesis on "The North Carolina Furniture Industry: 1885-1923." His many interests and vibrant personality will invite many questions for the Q and A period following his talk. PROBUS meets at the fellowship hall of Berea Baptist Church on Hwy 150, west of Perth Road in Mooresville. This organization of retired Professional and Business people invites all interested retirees to attend this free presentation. Fellowship time, with coffee, begins at 10 a.m., followed at 10:30 by a brief meeting and the speaker's presentation.
