The Second Annual Legends Helping Legends Fundraiser will be held at Mooresville's Memory Lane Motorsports and Automotive Historical Museum, 769 River Highway (1.5 miles West of I-77, Exit 36) on Saturday, January 19th from 10am-4pm. This year's event will benefit the medical fund established on behalf of Mr. Sam Ard, 1983-84 NASCAR Busch Series Champion. Sam won hundreds of races during his storied career, including 22 NASCAR Busch Series events in only 92 starts! Mr. Ard's 10 wins in 1983 is a single season Busch Series record that still stands today. His career was tragically ended by life-threatening injuries suffered in a 1984 crash at Rockingham.
In recent years, Ard has been battling a foe more treacherous than any he ever faced on the race track, Alzheimers Disease. Physicians have said it is likely Sam's crash 23 years ago speeded the onset of the debilitating disease. With no pension plan in place for NASCAR drivers, the affliction has created both a physical and financial hardship for Ard and his wife, Jo.
Hopefully, with the support of race fans and the community, the Second Annual Legends Helping Legends Fundraiser will, at least in part, alleviate some of the Ard's financial burdens. Last year's event for former racing announcer Bill Connell was a huge success that helped defray some of his medical bills due to chronic diabetes. More than 50 racing celebrities were on hand to greet fans and sign autographs last year with more expected this year.
The Legends Helping Legends or Racing Fundraiser promises to be one of the most exciting and fun-filled events of the year for race fans of all ages. It is an all day happening that will bring fans up close and personal with drivers and cars they aren't likely to see anywhere else.
The $8 admission fee will include a tour of Memory Lane Automotive Museum, which houses well over 150 vintage NASCAR racers, sprint cars, drag cars, antique autos and special interest vehicles - as well as a chance to visit with the dozens of drivers, crew chiefs and mechanics from racing's past and present who will be participating at this landmark gathering.
A 50/50 raffle, auction, door prize drawings, a vintage race car show (weather permitting) with one of Sam Ard's actual race cars and much more will take place throughout the day. We hope you will make plans to be a part of it all.
A Motorcycle Ride from Tilley Harley Davidson, Statesville to Memory Lane will be held in conjunction with the fundraiser. Details call Vickie Kress 704-872-3883. Past riders included Harry Gant, Don Tilley, and Buddy Parrot.
Food will be provided by John Boy & Billy's Grillzilla
